Hi! Iím Laura Vanderbeek, Iíve been married to my best friend Tyler for 9 years. Iím a mother of two. Iíve been digital scrapbooking since 2002...and Iím a young adult cancer survivor. I was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma Stage 2B 4 weeks after my second child was born. After 6 months of chemo and 5 weeks of radiation, Iíve now been in remission for 2 years.
As Iíve worked on recording the stories of my family through digital scrapbooking, I began to realize that it doesn't take long before the story of one's life can become completely lost, unless it gets written down. Iím not the first cancer survivor in my family. There is so much strength and insight we can gain from someone else's struggles, especially when we are faced with something similar. I also feel it is important to record their accomplishments, their loves, and their victories. For example, let me tell you a little bit about my Dad's sister, Little Pat. She was beautiful and had a great sense of humor. Her junior year of high school she was Prom Queen and tied an Olympic track record ... all while she struggled with terminal cancer. She died when she was 17 and so I never got to meet her, but her determination encouraged me to be strong through it all. I want my children and grandchildren to know her story, her great strength and courage, and how she inspired me. But I can only record what my Dad can remember. We each have our own obstacles to overcome, as well as things that inspire us and help us to thrive. My greatest hope is that the stories I share through scrapbooking, whether they are mine, or that of a family member, will someday help someone else.
Since Iíve been going through recovery Iíve tried to find ways to help others. I do not take my survival lightly and feel I owe a great debt to those who traveled this road before me. I feel very honored that Michelle allowed me to use her products here at CottageArts to design these two albums. Your purchase of these albums helps in two ways. They will help you record your story, and the stories of your loved ones ... before those stories are forgotten. And a portion of the profits will go to benefit cancer research through the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and the American Cancer Society.
