Hi, Rikki here, to show you a great, non-destructive way to make digital tape look more realistic. It goes from top right to bottom left.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"fbx-link fbx-instance\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cottagearts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/tape_tut_4b_engl.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-12233\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cottagearts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/tape_tut_4b_engl-500x500.jpg\" alt=\"tape_tut_4b_engl\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cottagearts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/tape_tut_4b_engl-500x500.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.cottagearts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/tape_tut_4b_engl-240x240.jpg 240w, https:\/\/www.cottagearts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/tape_tut_4b_engl.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>To emphasize\/show the edge of the paper underneath the tape you will use the dodge and burn tool on the Toolbar.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"fbx-link fbx-instance\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cottagearts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/tape_tut_5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-12234\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cottagearts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/tape_tut_5.jpg\" alt=\"tape_tut_5\" width=\"192\" height=\"107\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But before using dodge and burn you want to make sure your method is non-destructive. You create a layer above the tape, activate the new layer, ctrl+click on the tape layer so you see the marching ants around your tape and fill the empty layer above with 50% gray. That gray layer you set to Overlay blend mode. Here are my settings<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"fbx-link fbx-instance\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cottagearts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/tape_tut_11.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-12240 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cottagearts.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/tape_tut_11-500x34.jpg\" alt=\"tape_tut_11\" width=\"500\" height=\"34\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cottagearts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/tape_tut_11-500x34.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.cottagearts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/tape_tut_11.jpg 581w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>You rather want to use low settings and repeat what you are doing instead of doing too much at once.<\/p>\n<p>Now you dodge the tape along the ants within the selection, so that the side of the tape becomes slightly lighter.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"fbx-link fbx-instance\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cottagearts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/tape_tut_12.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-12241 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cottagearts.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/tape_tut_12-500x500.jpg\" alt=\"tape_tut_12\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cottagearts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/tape_tut_12-500x500.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.cottagearts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/tape_tut_12-240x240.jpg 240w, https:\/\/www.cottagearts.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/tape_tut_12.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Can you see the light edge to the right of the ants?<\/p>\n<p>Now you invert the selection, so that the outside of the paper is selected (Shift+Ctrl+I) and choose the burn tool.
