    Brigham City, Arizona Territory

Brigham City, Arizona Territory was a fort built in 1876 by early Mormon settlers near Winslow,
Arizona. It was built for protection from Indian attacks, which never came. Brigham City is one of 4 forts built in the area at that time. Of the 4, Brigham City is the only one with partial walls and a building still standing. My great-great-grandparents helped build this fort and lived there for 4 years. In 1992 when a flier was passed around at a meeting of our local chapter of the Arizona archaeological Society asking for volunteers to help excavate the site, I was so excited! I volunteered and spent a fantastic week helping delve into the history of the site. I went back to help out several times during 1992 through 1996. The old dining hall was still standing and part of one of the outer walls of the fort. My grandmother had been one of the cooks and my grandfather the cobbler; it was so exciting to be able to stand where I knew they had lived and worked! Our excavations over the years turned up more of the foundations than we had expected and threw us some curves too. We had a map of the fort drawn by a former resident, so we thought we knew what to expect, but we found foundations where we didnít expect, always a new mystery to explore! We made time for field trips to local interests and I saw places I would never have been able to see on my own. We formed a close friendship with Alan during that time and have helped out on several of his projects over the years.
