    Trammell - DeWitt Cemetery

In March of 1999, John and I were asked if we would help restore an old Cemetery and find the graves. The cemetery had been abandoned for over 100 years and was overgrown with trees and bushes. There was no sign of any graves and any
markings had been vandalized or weathered away. We cleaned the ground and then dug trenches about 12 deep across the land looking for a change in soil color that would indicate where a grave was. Once the sides were marked, we trenched
to find the head and foot of the graves. We discovered 10 graves and in order to preserve their location, we built wood borders around each grave and filled it with rocks. In spite of hours of research, we were unable to identify the names of most of the people buried here. We knew the names of two people from family records and are fairly certain of the names of two others. This project was a labor of love for us and it gave us such a good feeling to be able to honor those resting here.
